An investigation is ongoing into a fatal pursuit Sunday evening.
Joseph Roy Anthony Beeler, 37, of Mitchell, died in the crash Sunday, Scotts Bluff County Sheriff Mark Overman said.
A pursuit with Beeler had begun at about 9:49 p.m. when a Mitchell Police officer responded to a report of a 1994 Chevrolet pickup traveling west in the eastbound lane of Highway 26 approaching Mitchell.
The officer located the vehicle at a convenience store and attempted to stop the driver, who was leaving east on Highway 26. The driver initially stopped, but then fled when the officer exited his car. As the driver fled, traveling east on Highway 26, at times he traveled in the wrong lane of traffic and at speeds in excess of 95 miles per hour, Overman said.
Deputies attempted to deploy spike strips west of Scottsbluff to bring the pursuit to an end but the driver avoided them. The driver entered Scottsbluff on Highway 26 and eventually turned south onto Avenue I where the pursuit continued until the driver crossed the railroad tracks north of the Avenue I and West 20th Street intersection. At that point, the driver lost control of the pickup, crashing into a large tree in the front yard of a residence at 2029 Ave. I and he was ejected from the vehicle.
